It could have been a new health scandal. Instead, you might not find your favorite chocolate cakes on the shelves anymore.
For several days, the ranges Mikado, Little Schoolboy, Granola or pim’s missing in shops. But, if Mondelez, the parent company of these brands, has stopped several production lines and certain deliveries, it is not really its fault.
One of its main chocolate suppliers, Barry Callebaut, in Belgium, alerted Mondelez to the presence of salmonella at one of its production sites last June.
Shutdown of some production lines
Faced with this possible salmonella contamination, Mondelez carried out an audit of its own production sites concerned by the potentially affected batches. ” TO a strictly preventive level, [nous avons] stopped production lines, ”says Mondelez, contacted by news.fr.
1er July, we were able to confirm, after implementing all the necessary internal controls and traceability measures, that all Mondelez products on the market are safe, without any trace of salmonella and therefore without any food safety risk.
The products marketed are therefore suitable for consumption. In France, the Cestas site in Gironde is still subject to deep cleaning and disinfection of production lines “as a precaution, to guarantee the total safety of our biscuits”, notes the company.
This technical and complex operation takes Several weeks.
Why is the shortage still going on?
If even today, almost two months after the discovery of the contamination, all the cake references have not yet returned to the shelves, it is because the cleaning and disinfection operations of the factories take time for the supplier of chocolate.
Thus, Mondelez tells us that “delivery of chocolate masses by one of our suppliers […] has not yet returned to normal. They resume gradually. »
What further delay the production of cakes and the rupture of certain references on the shelves. Mondelez expects production to resume in the coming weeks.
