Unions of magistrates and lawyers denounce “a demagogic and security communication dictated by the far right”, after the reaction of the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupond-Moretti, to the “Kohlanness” organized at the prison of Fresnes.
The anger does not subside after the controversy aroused by the Olympics organized at the prison of Fresnes. If these games shocked, magistrates and lawyers are also annoyed by the reaction of Éric Dupond-Moretti, the Minister of Justice, seeing “a demagogic and security communication dictated by the far right”, reports AFP. Visiting Fleury-Mérogis prison in Essonne on Tuesday, the Keeper of the Seals assured the press that if he had known that“ a karting competition was organized »he would have “put a very clear veto” at this event called Kohlanness.
New conditions for reintegration projects
Éric Dupond-Moretti also announced on Twitter that a circular would be published to fix “the conditions necessary for carrying out reintegration projects in prison”. Reintegration projects now “subject to the express validation of the management of the prison administration”.
Enough to provoke the anger of the Syndicate of the Judiciary (SM), the Syndicate of Lawyers of France (SAF) and the National Association of Sentence Enforcement Judges (Anjap). In a joint statement, echoed by AFP, the organizations first recalled that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had condemned the State two years ago. “for the unworthy and degrading nature of the conditions of detention in its penitentiary establishments, including that of Fresnes”. Before complaining: “While rats and bed bugs are still running around there, our organizations are indignant that the Keeper of the Seals is moved by a reintegration action. »
The minister “agitates the populist myth of prison”
According to the unions and the association, Éric Dupond-Moretti preferred “shaking up the populist myth of the “club med” prison, which is too comfortable or recreational, rather than recalling the prison reality that the 72,000 inmates and prison staff in French prisons live on a daily basis”, reports AFP. On the contrary, the Keeper of the Seals would, according to the authors of the press release, “fidelity to the objectives of the sentence stated in article 707 of the code of criminal procedure”that’s to say “the prevention of recidivism and the protection of society, which cannot be separated from the reintegration of the convicted person”.
This event was organized for the detainees of Fresnes prison at the end of July. A video published on the Internet caused a scandal, showing the prisoners indulging in water games, tug of war or go-kart races. The sequence has since been deleted by the organizers, in particular after the revelation that two of the participating detainees were sentenced to heavy sentences: one for rape, the other for murder.
