The international law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP has appointed two partners, a counsel and a senior attorney at its Paris headquarters. Laurie Achtouk-Spivak and Sophie de Beer have been appointed as partners, effective January 1, 2023. In addition, Laura Birène and Sophie Troussard-Fauré have also been appointed as counsel and senior attorney respectively.

As a partner, Laurie Achtouk-Spivak works in arbitration and international litigation. She represents clients in commercial arbitrations as well as investors and States in investment arbitrations. She also advises on issues of international law, particularly on aspects related to investment and sustainable development. She has recently advised large corporations and states including the Hellenic Republic, the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, the Republic of Iraq, the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Arab Republic of Egypt. Laurie Achtouk-Spivak joined Cleary Gottlieb in 2006 and became counsel in 2016. Holder of an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, a DEA from the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas and a DESS from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, she is also a graduate of Sciences Po Paris. Finally, Laurie Achtouk-Spivak is registered with the bars of Paris and New York.

For her part, Sophie de Beer mainly works in the field of mergers and acquisitions, on listed and unlisted companies, in France and abroad. She has developed particular expertise in M&A operations, partnerships and joint ventures in the banking and financial sector as well as in the regulatory aspects associated with these operations. She has supported numerous clients such as Amundi, BNP Paribas, BPCE, Cerberus, Crédit Agricole, GlobalFoundries, Groupama, JP Morgan, My Money Bank, Natixis and Veolia. Sophie de Beer joined Cleary in 2000 and became counsel in 2005. Holder of a Master II from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and an LL.M. from Columbia Law School, she is also a graduate of HEC. Sophie de Beer is admitted to the bars of Paris and New York.

Appointed as counsel, Laura Birène mainly works on capital market and financing transactions. She has advised numerous clients including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, Crédit Lyonnais, JP Morgan, Latour Capital, Universal Music Group, Vivendi and Worldline. Laura Birène joined the firm in 2013. She holds an aggregation and a master’s degree in law, economics and management from the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan. She also has a Master II from the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas and a Master I from the University of Rennes. She is also registered with the Paris Bar.

Sophie Troussard-Fauré, senior attorney, works in European and French competition law. She has recently advised companies such as Airbus, Tech Data, Elsan, Ortec, Vivendi and Whirlpool. Sophie Troussard-Fauré, who joined the firm in 2014, holds a Master’s degree from the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas and a Magister Juris from the University of Oxford (Hertford College). She also has a Master I from Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University and an LL.B. from King’s College London. In addition, Sophie Troussard-Fauré is registered with the Paris Bar.
