Laurence Hascoet qualified for the Ironman 70.3* World Championships in Saint-Georges, Utah (USA). On the menu Friday, October 28 for the resident of Colleville Montgomery (Calvados): 1.8 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21.5 of running.

What is your sports background?

I had always been running. My daughter was swimming, she did the French National 3 championships. She came to run with me, she didn’t last 500 meters at the start. She hung on and we finished six major marathons together in five years: New York, Berlin, London, Tokyo, Boston and Chicago. We were the first “mother-daughter to finish them”. Then she got married and we had no more challenges.

Except that you rebounded on the triathlon?

My son-in-law, a triathlete, offered to train me for a race. I did my first Ironwoman in 2019, those are extreme distances. I finished the one in Switzerland in June, we were 2,500 at the start, 1,000 gave up, we have to hang on. This is where I qualified for the world championships.

When all goes well, it takes me between 5:30 and 6 hours to cover the 113 km. In Switzerland, under 41°, it took me 7 hours!

What is your training?

I train every day, 9 to 11 hours a week intensively. My daughter taught me to swim the front crawl, but what I’m doing isn’t miraculous. On the other hand, on a bike, I go for it! In Switzerland, the first did 39 minutes in swimming and I, 53. I caught up with everything with cycling and running.

In what state of mind before this test?

Three weeks before the race, I lowered the training a bit, I’m ready. I don’t really realize yet. There will be old pros. For me to win, they would have to fall! But I’m not going there to stick stickers either, my objective is to finish in the best time I can do.

Either way, it’s a great party. It’s also true that, on the starting line, I sometimes wonder what I’m doing here!

Do your little girls, 3 and 4 years old, encourage you?

My son-in-law is a triathlon champion and yet, for them, I am their reference. The first asked her father to train her. She says she wants to be like grandma! The second is more of a trail runner. She lives in Chamonix, she hikes like a chamois. She runs down!

*The Ironman 70.3 is a 70.3 mile triathlon, or 113 km in total.
