Educating a dog is a great adventure, but also a job and a responsibility to be taken very seriously. Whether it’s a puppy or an adult animal, it takes time, patience and discipline. The two scenarios are quite different, but many veterinarians find that raising an older dog is no more difficult; it just requires another approach. Whether adopting an already grown dog from a shelter or trying to correct the bad habits of the animal in the house, the task is far from impossible. Patience and perseverance will have to be the key words of this rehabilitation, because it represents daily work.
Where to start ?
It is essential to take into account the past of the animal in order to adapt its education according to its deficiencies, its needs, its fears, its traumas, etc. If it is a new adoption, it is necessary to learn as much as possible about the experience of the dog, and to observe it to understand some of its behaviors. If it is an animal to be re-educated, the master will above all have to question himself and understand where he failed in order to correct his mistakes. And this is undoubtedly where the greatest difficulty lies!
Nevertheless, the recipe is the same as with a young dog: we reward and encourage good behavior and we ignore what is unpleasant. On the other hand, learning is done over a longer period, because an old dog needs more repetitions than a puppy to assimilate a novelty, as in humans, finally! In case of difficulties, do not hesitate to get help from a dog trainer or a behaviorist, who will be able to give sound advice.
In order to encourage the adoption of the oldest dogs and thus offer them a retirement worthy of the name, the 30 million Friends Foundation has set up “Operation Doyens”, in which several shelters located throughout France participate. . For any adoption of a dog aged 10 or over in one of these shelters, the 30 million Friends Foundation undertakes to pay any veterinary costs, up to €600, upon presentation of invoices.
