The star-studded flag that flies above the White House was lowered to half-mast in tribute to Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon when her death was announced. The same measure was taken on all public buildings in Washington and throughout the United States, as well as on American embassies and ships around the world. This rare honor given to a foreign head of state was ordered by Joe Biden to salute the memory of the sovereign whom he had met for the first time when he was a senator in 1982.

She was an incredibly gracious and courteous woman.said the American president, who personally went to sign the condolence book at the British Embassy in Washington. “The thoughts and prayers of the American people are with the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth in their grief..”
