At the Château d’Ussé, the dogs are almost tourists like the others

A group of “tourists” accompanied by their four-legged friends were able to visit the “Castle of Sleeping Beauty” this Saturday, November 12. Ussé is one of the rare castles to open its doors to dogs, kept on a leash.

Exceptional fact this Saturday, November 12: four-legged tourists were as numerous as bipeds in Ussé, in Indre-et-Loire. The self-proclaimed “Castle of Sleeping Beauty” welcomed around 10 a.m. a troop of “tourists” accompanied by their dogs. According to the management of the domain, more than 700 tourists visited the castle this Saturday, “and many with their doggies“.

The Château d’Ussé is thus distinguished by the freedom granted to man’s best friend in the field. “Dogs have access everywhere, we only ask that they be on a leash inside, but they can be free in the gardens“, rejoices Casimir De Blacas, the owner:

Sometimes I ask people why they don’t let their dogs go in the park, they tell me they’re afraid they won’t come back!

Casimir De Blacas, owner of the Château d’Ussé

It is the only large castle in the Centre-Val de Loire to accept dogs roaming free outdoors, and one of the few (along with Chenonceau and Langeais) to allow them to visit the dwellings, on a leash. “We’ve always had dogs, they’ve always been part of the family“, says the owner, who decided to accept dogs in the castle as soon as it opened to the public in 1976. Obviously without fear of breakage.

Enough to bring these toutourists in large numbers, grouped under the banner of the “Tourism with my dog” website. Owners of dogs in need of discovery can share tips and advice on traveling with their canine friend.

Still, despite some “thanks” of visitors, Casimir De Blacas regrets the lack of notoriety of the canine particularism of Ussé. “Maybe we don’t communicate enoughhe concedes. This is the reason why we had the idea of making this special day!“Another tour group visit is in any case already planned, on February 11, 2023.
