The gendarmes and members of the Brigitte-Bardot foundation saved a horse, six dogs and a rabbit in great danger due to lack of appropriate care. Their owner, a 24-year-old woman, explained that she did not have the financial means to feed them properly. The animals were taken away from him.
The animal was painful to see. This draft horse was skin and bones. The quadruped abandoned in a field by its owner in Lanta (31) weighed just over half of its normal weight, ie 250 kg. With such deficiencies, the equine’s chances of survival were slim. Especially since nearby, there was neither water nor food for the poor animal.
At the end of June, alerted to the situation by local residents, members of the Brigitte-Bardot foundation, accompanied by Marc Mengaud, the mayor of the town and by a veterinarian, went to the site. Noting the condition of the horse, they made contact with the owner, a 24-year-old woman. She refused them access to her house and did not wish to speak about her ability to take care of her animal. The association’s inspectors were still able to see a few dogs inside the house, which were also visibly in bad shape. The young woman seems to realize that the equine cannot go without food and sends it to a horse pension so that it can regain its strength while waiting to find a lasting solution. Some time later, she picks it up.
The horse has gained weight and seems out of danger. Except that the young woman, probably totally stuck by financial constraints, manages to hide it. The gendarmes of the Lanta brigade who were to check the state of health of the animal found its trace on October 12 thanks to the assistance of the Brigitte-Bardot foundation. He survives somehow in a meadow in Gauré, a very small village east of Toulouse.
The prosecutor orders the seizure of the animals
The public prosecutor authorizes the gendarmes and the veterinary services of the prefecture to seize the equine. The soldiers carry out a search of the young woman who lives with her mother. They enter the accommodation, a former police station, which is in a totally unsanitary state. They discover there six dogs and a rabbit in a cage in very poor health. They have not been abused in any way but are sorely lacking in care. The owner is taken into custody. She explains that she was unable to properly maintain her animals for financial reasons. She will be summoned to court, once the report of the veterinary services has been drawn up. The horse, the canines and the rabbit were taken care of in different structures.
